Reflection

As I reflect on the content of this course, I realize the importance of understanding the nine elements of digital citizenship. As a teacher, I also realize the need for digital citizenship to be taught to students as soon as they can use technology devices. For my personal and professional development, the nine elements of digital citizenship are essential to providing a professional online presence. In my choice to study  Kathy Shrock as an example of a professional online presence and in reviewing my classmates’ choices, I determined what constituted a good professional online presence. I viewed examples and ideas on what I might want to include in considering the creation of my professional presence. Creating the PLE was challenging in the initial stages of navigating the wiki format and organizing pages and content. Still, the technical skills required to create and organize the pages became more comfortable with each additional page or posting requirement. While the PLE is a work in progress, I am satisfied with the work completed now.

This class has made me more mindful of my presence on my only created social network site, Twitter. I use this site for growing a brand and developing a specific clientele for a new business. I have since created a presence on LinkedIn, which I did not have when I started this class. I only viewed LinkedIn as an online resume but have since become aware of all of the available extensions and attributes of the program.

What I found most interesting is that this class encouraged me to view my professional presence objectively and, with feedback from my classmates, make any revisions I deemed appropriate to present myself positively and professionally.

As I wrote in my Blog about Digital Citizenship, “I am particularly curious about the dangers of information privacy, its impact on a continually developing technological society, and the need to establish companies that require compensation to provide privacy protection. So many avenues have come into existence that tracks people’s movement on the internet; thru social media and online purchases. I am curious how people will proceed going forward, recognizing the dangers and consequences attached to the exposition of private information. The future of information privacy appears two-fold. First, people must understand what constitutes information privacy and the pending consequences of exposing personal and sensitive information. Secondly, corporations need to provide methods available to users to protect privacy. “

Community and collaboration were essential to working with a team, creating a presentation that could be used to support understanding specified areas of digital citizenship as chosen by each team. Working collaboratively was purposeful for feedback and constructive revisions. I think it significant to mention that each team member was permitted to choose the area of the contribution that they were most comfortable with the support of their team members. The final project is a visual understanding of what can be developed using varied media and presentation styles for personal or professional usage.

I presented the introductory video for Digital Health and Wellness in that collaboration. I worked to create an informative and engaging video that would provide a short introduction to the wiki page and encourage viewers to read the additional information on the page.

I believe in life-long learning; part of that learning for me is developing new technology skills. I am continually learning to adapt to changes and understand how those changes in technology use may be best used appropriately and ethically. One of the significant content areas I came away with from this class is the concept of curation. There is an enormous amount of information on the internet, and I  recognize the need to filter that information. In creating a professional online presence, curation allows me to interact with my communities of interest, gathering and sharing the best relevant information for my chosen area of focus on my social networking sites.

Blogging was a new adventure for me. I do not read blogs, so I had no real reference point before this class. I realize blogging is similar to reflection, providing information, insight, opinions, comments, and feelings about specific topics of interest or concern. It was a great way to share a part of me, my personality. This class not only introduced me to blogging but did so with two ways of presentation, in a written format as included on my wiki site and in a video presented below.

I look forward to using blogging to share information personally and professionally.

As I continue reflecting on what I learned from this class, I want to focus on one word, confidence. I no longer feel challenged by learning new technology but am embracing the new knowledge and look forward to continuing to explore new software and applications. The artifacts and projects created for this class are introductory to my personal and professional development, providing a basis for continuing to learn. I have stepped out of the “old school” and developed my personal and professional digital identity by creating this PLE and have established a presence in professional social networks. I look forward to continuing this journey to becoming more proficient with technology, representing myself with a positive digital identity, and learning the components and content of online teaching.
